Whitney Hedges, New Head Gardener for Fairlight Hall

We are very excited to announce the appointment of a new Head Gardener for Fairlight Hall. Beginning in Mid-November we welcome California-born Whitney Hedges. Whitney was bought up in a creative household, with both parents trained in fine art. She emigrated to the UK in her early 20’s and after working as a music promoter in the retail drinks industry, she studied art and interior design.
During her training in interior design Whitney became totally distracted by gardens and plants, and this distractionvery quickly developed into a full blown obsession! It was during a course with the Royal Horticultural Society, that her love of colour, shape, form and biology all coalesced together in her discovery of Horticulture.
Whitney’s fascination with horticulture together with her long standing love of Art and Design led to her enrolling at the University of Greenwich to study for a Degree in Garden Design where she graduated with 1st class honours. During her time at the university, at Marchants Hardy Plants under the tutorage of the renowned plantsman, Graham Gough; it was at Marchants that her knowledge of plants and propagation were honed and expanded.
Her interest is in creating garden spaces which have a strong connection to nature and their surroundings. In her first role as a Head Gardener at a privately-owned country house hotel, she restored a two and a half acre Walled Garden back to full production.
It was while working in close liaison with the head chef that she became immersed in productive gardening, growing the fresh vegetables and cut flowers for the hotel. In recent years vegetable production and propagation have become her speciality but Whitney’s first love has always been herbaceous and tropical planting: “I am really excited about my new role as Head Gardener at Fairlight Hall and am busy planning for the coming year.”
